Advent wreathFirst Sunday of Advent: December 3, 2006

Welcome, friends, to the readings for the first Sunday of the new church year, and the first Sunday of the Advent season. It’s a time of preparation, as the Scriptures take us into the echoes of Jesus’ first coming that sound through time into his return. What a day that will be!

Here are the gospel and epistle readings that I’ll be working from this Sunday. What do you see?

Luke 21:25-36

25-26″It will seem like all hell has broken loose—sun, moon, stars, earth, sea, in an uproar and everyone all over the world in a panic, the wind knocked out of them by the threat of doom, the powers-that-be quaking.

27-28″And then—then!—they’ll see the Son of Man welcomed in grand style—a glorious welcome! When all this starts to happen, up on your feet. Stand tall with your heads high. Help is on the way!”

29-33He told them a story. “Look at a fig tree. Any tree for that matter. When the leaves begin to show, one look tells you that summer is right around the corner. The same here—when you see these things happen, you know God’s kingdom is about here. Don’t brush this off: I’m not just saying this for some future generation, but for this one, too—these things will happen. Sky and earth will wear out; my words won’t wear out.

34-36″But be on your guard. Don’t let the sharp edge of your expectation get dulled by parties and drinking and shopping. Otherwise, that Day is going to take you by complete surprise, spring on you suddenly like a trap, for it’s going to come on everyone, everywhere, at once. So, whatever you do, don’t go to sleep at the switch. Pray constantly that you will have the strength and wits to make it through everything that’s coming and end up on your feet before the Son of Man.”

1 Thessalonians 3:9-13

9-10What would be an adequate thanksgiving to offer God for all the joy we experience before him because of you? We do what we can, praying away, night and day, asking for the bonus of seeing your faces again and doing what we can to help when your faith falters.

11-13May God our Father himself and our Master Jesus clear the road to you! And may the Master pour on the love so it fills your lives and splashes over on everyone around you, just as it does from us to you. May you be infused with strength and purity, filled with confidence in the presence of God our Father when our Master Jesus arrives with all his followers.

  1. Hey, thanks, Sudiegirl! I do remember that gig as being great fun. Thanks for your kind words, and reading your blog has taken WAY too much time this afternoon – it’s wonderful, exuberant, delightfully blabby!
Nope, I have no problem with sharing my link anywhere – in fact, am grateful for it.
Meanwhile, come by anytime – I’d enjoy your thoughts! And I’ll show up your way from time to time.
    Best wishes!

  2. Wow!

I am a Washington, Iowa native (maiden name – Dawson), and I remember you played upright bass with Mike Jewell while I sang a couple numbers at the 1995 Habitat for Humanity Talent Show. You were an incredible player then, and I assume you still are.

I’m so glad you’ve got this blog out there! I’m recently signed up with Iowa Blogs as well. I also have a blog with MyP-C (Iowa City Press-Citizen).

This is a very eloquent blog that articulates your feelings about Christianity as well as the guidance and insight you hope others will gain. Gorgeous lay out, and very impressive overall.

If it’s not a problem, can I share your link with my pastors? I attend an Episcopal church here in Maryland (DC metro suburb) and they have a great website…I’d like them to see this just to show that other churches are getting the Word out there in the same manner.

Thanks so much for creating this type of ministry – not only for your congregation, but for the growing online community.

Come by and visit me anytime…sometimes my antics can be a li’l zany, but I do work hard to keep God in my life.

  4. Mmmmmm Aren’t those verses from Thessalonians incredibly beautiful??? They just brought tears to my eyes. Reminds me of a verse I read recently from Psalm 42:8 (NLT) Through each day the Lord pours His unfailing upon me… I REALLY want to learn to live in the REALITY of these verses!!! I want to know, each day, no matter what it brings, that His love is poured out on me. Filled with confidence in His presence. Yep. That’s what I want.
