Des Moines Register rebukes McCain, endorses Obama

“Though widely regarded as a man of honor, he has overseen a campaign premised on purposeful distortions about Obama and his record.”

Amen to that.

McCain, like Obama, brought an appealing personal history to the campaign. He’s a genuine American hero
The Register’s editorial board endorsed McCain for the Republican nomination and looked forward to a serious-minded contest between competing ideologies and worthy foes
But it’s as if McCain has lost his way, forfeiting principle for gain of a few points in the polls
Though widely regarded as a man of honor, he has overseen a campaign premised on purposeful distortions about Obama and his record
Worst of all, in grasping for political edge in his choice of a running mate, he burdened his ticket and potentially the country with an individual utterly unqualified to ascend to the presidency
Before choosing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain emphasized the importance of experience
Then he picked a running mate who clearly isn’t ready.

  1. No kidding! One of the reasons the “get out the vote” effort is so important here is that everybody has to squeeze it in around their work day, and they’re tired and tempted to just forget it. In my little town, many people commute to a larger city, then have to beat it home in time to vote. Polls are open something like eight to eight (I think – I’ve never been there in the A.M.!)

  3. Obama wants people to take the day off now to work for the get out the vote for him. “Tell you bosses that I’m taking the day off to work for Obama” […]

Monte Says: Paul, after this your comment disintegrated into fact-free slams. That’s not what this space is for.

  4. It is somewhat surprising to me that the Register would be so frank about McCain’s abandonment of honor. Newspapers are awfully reluctant to admit one candidate is significantly more scurrilous than another.
