Luke 23:33-43; Colossians 1:11-20; Jeremiah 23:1-6; Luke 1:68-79

It is Reign of Christ Sunday around the world, and Thanksgiving weekend here in the US, so songs from both:
Call to worship: Georgann
Come, Ye Thankful People, Come; How Great Is Our God; Reconciliation Song (for the phrase “mercy and forgiveness”); In His Time; Give Thanks
Invocation: Victoria
Welcome

Sermon: Today is the last Sunday of the church year; one week from today begins beautiful Advent, the preparation for the coming of Christ. And we’ll begin walking through the gospel of Matthew.

Today we end our tour through Luke. Thumb through it, and see how much we’ve learned – look at the chapter headings, and notice how friendly they are to you, how familiar. How much we’ve learned about Jesus this year! What a master teacher he is!

And today, around the world, is called Christ the King Sunday: the celebration of the reign of Christ. But I was surprised when I saw the Scripture from which it came. You’d expect something obviously regal. Look what we have instead: Read the rest of this entry »

Marvel, ye lovers of bicycles

Strida 7 second standard fold (2 second is possible)

I’ve been mesmerized by bikes since I was too young to ride one. Something about them speaks of mastery of one’s world. Perhaps it is an echo of the freedom first gained as a kid too young to drive.

Cool Tools caught my eye with this slick fold-up, demo’d in a 30-second video.
Someone out there will be as magnetized as I am. Watch the bounce it makes after fold-out. Ahhh. Now that’s a “come-hither” look.  Can you feel it?

Neither shall they learn war any more (readings for 12/2/07)

with one comment

The church year begins anew this Sunday with Advent, the anticipation. We wait not only for the celebration of Christmas, but for the Day that slowly dawns. And that hope is part of why I am a follower of Jesus:

He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

May bits of that Kingdom be arriving through me this year.

Zogby Poll: Obama, Edwards Strong but Clinton Slips Against GOPers General election match-ups show the New York Senator would lose against every top Republican
UTICA, New York – A new Zogby Interactive survey shows Democrat Hillary Clinton of New York would lose to every one of the top five Republican presidential contenders, representing a reversal of fortune for the national Democratic front–runner who had led against all prospective GOP opponents earlier this year.
Meanwhile, fellow Democrats Barack Obama of Illinois and John Edwards of North Carolina would defeat or tie every one of the Republicans, this latest survey shows.

Many of us recovering religious-right-oholics thought this would happen. But I have no idea what happens next.

Vets now 26% of homeless

leave a comment »

clipped from www.juancole.com
200,000 veterans have been homeless at some point in the past year, and … veterans make up 26% of the homeless, even though they are only 11% of the population.
Ironically, among the best things you can do to support the veterans is to give regularly to your local homeless shelter. …
Health care for the Iraq veterans that actually is proffered by the US government will cost Americans at least $650 billion, or over $2,000 each. And even then there will be all those tens of thousands of homeless vets whose lives have been wrecked.

Perhaps enlistment contracts should have consumer warnings like this:

Likelihood of military service ruining your life is much higher than casualty figures suggest. Expect increased risk of divorce, job loss, emotional instability, and homelessness.

I’ll guess those are things the all-volunteer military’s recruits don’t know are part of the deal. And Congress doesn’t seem to consider them when permitting troops to be taken to war.

Jesus Loves Osama

with 5 comments

Now here’s an interesting thought, posted on signs by Baptist churches in inner-city Sydney:

Jesus Loves Osama - from Flickr user Ronchy

The reaction from other clergy and even the Australian Prime Minister has been overwhelmingly negative, as other groups have tried to distance themselves from a church that would go so far as to say Christ … could actually find it within himself to love Osama Bin Laden, Terrorist #1. … [follow the above link to see sample comments] [By contrast,] Dan at Signposts says:

What a fabulous illustration of how confronting the message of Jesus is. Nobody denies Jesus said it, but everyone wants to qualify the sentiment and distance themselves from the presentation of the sign. link
