Senator McCain, please re-consider

with 2 comments

Sen. John McCain, speaking to a cheering Veterans of Foreign Wars audience, jokes about bombing Iran. Below is a letter I have mailed him in response.

[4/20, 6:30 p.m.: Whoa, that video didn’t last long! Apparently it’s been pulled from YouTube. Here’s an account of the event from the Georgetown Times via Nitpicker:

Another man — wondering if an attack on Iran is in the works — wanted to know when America is going to “send an air mail message to Tehran.”
McCain began his answer by changing the words to a popular Beach Boys song.
“Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran,” he sang to the tune of Barbara Ann. ]

Dear Senator McCain:

I urge you to re-consider your light-hearted comments toward the bombing of Iran.

Please reflect:

1. The history of our nations’ mutual relationship shows many more acts of aggression by the USA than by Iran. It was in Iran that the CIA first began taking down popularly elected democracies. Taking of hostages at the US embassy, for instance—like so many hostile Iranian actions—was done to protect themselves from the USA (in that case, the likelihood of another embassy-based coup).

2. But more importantly, bombs don’t fall on policies. They are people—moms and dads and sons and daughters—who are blown limb from limb. Is it ever appropriate to find amusement in that, as if it were a high-five football play?

You speak now as a statesman and play to a world audience. Words matter as never before. Politicians in Iran, for instance, may use your song to prove that America is heartless and must be confronted. Its result could be similar to that of President Bush’s infamous “Bring it on!”

And by now, mothers in Iran will have heard it. As they tuck their little ones into bed tonight, they’ll be wondering if the carelessness of two governments will bring terror to their babies’ eyes.

I pray you’ll help prevent that.

Sincerely,
/s/
(Rev.) Monte Asbury

P.S.: I welcome you or your staff at my blog’s post of this letter, or at my summary of Prof. Juan Cole’s history of Iran-US relations. Both may be found at http://www.masbury.wordpress.com.

  1. Thanks for the tip, 1ofHis! I was able to drop in an explanation in the video’s absence because of it. That video didn’t last long, did it?

  2. Will be interested in the response. The video is no longer available so I couldn’t view it.
