Tax help for low-income taxpayers

leave a comment »

Tax timeIt’s income tax time in the USA. My friend Delores, an accounting professor at a nearby university, tells me there are some often-overlooked helps available for low-income taxpayers.

Consider this: “It is estimated that over two million dollars [in Earned Income Tax Credit] goes uncollected [by low-income taxpayers] in Scott County alone.” And there are ninety-nine counties in Iowa!

Dee’s accounting majors spend Saturdays working in a program call Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). It’s sponsored by the IRS and promoted by churches, day care centers, and other community agencies. As a result of their work, low-income tax payers avoid paying both “outrageous fees” for tax preparation and becoming “prey” for tax preparers promoting “refund anticipation” loans…

Perhaps one of these programs exists in your area. Could be a boon to someone scraping by. Check with your local accounting schools or community agencies.

[And thanks, Dee – I’ll be writing soon!]
