MissionI’m thinking of songs that relate to Sunday’s Scriptures. How do these strike you? (To see the Scriptures themselves, click here.)

There Is a Louder Shout To Come – which refers to the end of time, as does Jesus in the gospel for the day.

You Are the One – “Many leaders are going to show up with forged identities claiming, ‘I’m the One,'” says Jesus in the same place. We’ll enjoy glad skepticism!

Healing Grace The writer of the letter to the Hebrews says, “So let’s do it—full of belief, confident that we’re presentable inside and out. Let’s keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going.” It reminds me of the words from Healing Grace that say, “Knowing I’m forgiven, and acceptable to you.”

I wish I had a song that follows Hebrews as it moves into the results of forgiveness: “Let’s see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching.” Encouraging love – helping out – spurring each other on – ah, that’s what church is to be.

And, look, it’s about the End, too, like the gospel reading! And it ties the End to mutual encouragement, mutual help and worship together. Hmm.

Heart of Worship – Continuing last week’s theme of genuine worship (remember the widow with the two pennies?), this song also restates our intent to focus on Jesus Christ himself as the example of all we want to become (and echoes You Are the One): I’m coming back to the heart of worship – and it’s all about You, all about You, Jesus!
