Partners in transfiguration

Yow. Here’s one of those terrifyingly beautiful things that come from the lips of people who know God. I saw it Desmond Tutuin Fearfully Human, In His Courts and Emergent Village.

Just as we are all meant to be contemplatives and hear the voice of God in our lives we are all meant to answer God’s call to be His partners in transfiguring the world. This calling, this encounter with God, is always to send us into the midst of human suffering.” – Desmond Tutu

And then Shiz adds:

That reminds me of another thing he says:

When we look squarely at injustice and get involved, we actually feel less pain, not more, because we overcome the gnawing guilt and despair that festers under our numbness. We clean the wound–our own and others’–and it can finally heal.

Ready to go?

  1. True, and that’s a good point. If that’s the case, then I like his comment even more. :)

  2. Thanks, Julenka, I see where you’re coming from. I wonder if it could be that he’s speaking to the many with tender hearts who are already overwhelmed with the pain around them, and who fear that moving any closer to it will be more than they can bear. Maybe it’s a word of comfort, like: “Don’t worry, you won’t be overcome. In fact, God will use it to heal you, too.”

    Make sense?

  3. I like the second comment, but I can’t help feeling it makes him sound as though he’s only helping others for the sake of appeasing his own conscience.

    Then again, why else?
